Schatz Energy Research Center

Schatz Energy Research Center (SERC) has worked since 1989 to develop, demonstrate, and commercialize fuel cell technology for use in real world settings. SERC developed a design for an internally humidified, low pressure PEM fuel cell and hold two U.S. patents on fuel cell technology. They have commercialized intellectual property via three license agreements with U.S. corporations and have built and deployed dozens of fuel cell stacks, many of them integrated into stand-alone power systems used in a variety of settings and in some cases integrated with photovoltaic power. SERC has built custom fuel cell test stations and portable fuel cell demonstration and experiment systems for our own use and for numerous other universities and research centers. We built the first street-legal PEM fuel cell vehicle in the United States. SERC has built and operated hydrogen vehicle fueling stations with on-site fuel production in two California locations, including one that is now part of the state’s Hydrogen Highway network. With funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the State of California, they have conducted projects to investigate performance of commercially available fuel cell materials, developed a high pressure PEM electrolyzer, and developed hydrogen and fuel cell curriculum for use at university and high school levels. SERC provides training, outreach, and safety review for public and private sector clients developing their own hydrogen infrastructure. Their current projects include upgrading our 350 bar (5,000 psi) hydrogen fueling station in Arcata, CA to 700 bar (10,000 psi) and providing first responder training for AC Transit’s new hydrogen bus fueling facility in Emeryville, CA.
